It's that time of year again. The crisp air and the falling leaves mean Autumn has arrived, and with it comes the Yazoo County Fair.
This year is the 89th anniversary, and organizers are gearing up for a full week of bright lights, fun rides and fair food.
The fair will open on Friday, Oct. 13, at 6 p.m. and will continue until Saturday, Oct. 21, at 11 p.m. Opening times and prices for admission vary from day to day, so please see the schedule for details. Parking is free for the public. Admission is $1 each for seniors over 60, and free for children under 30 inches tall.
Martin McGraw, chairman of the Yazoo County Fair Association, said they are excited for fair this year and have a lot of great things planned for visitors of all ages.
"Miller's Spectacular Shows is the company that brings in all the attractions," said McGraw. "They mix up the rides and games every year so that we always have something to look forward to."
McGraw added that the Yazoo County Soil and Water Conservation District has teamed up with the Farm Bureau Federation to sponsor an educational scavenger hunt for the children on Saturday, Oct. 21, from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. The exhibit is open to children of all ages. Participants must first go to the Farm Bureau booth in the exhibit barn to pick up their question sheets. The children will then visit five small farms located all over the fair grounds to complete their scavenger hunt forms. Once the kids have completed their forms, they must submit them back at the Farm Bureau table. Forms with correct answers will be entered for a drawing to win a very special grand prize.
Some of the most popular attractions at the Yazoo County Fair every year are the rides, games and fair food, as well as the arts and crafts show in the Exhibit Barn.
The fair has become a big source of tourism for the county, drawing in more and more visitors from out of town year after year.
"We have been fortunate enough to have had good weather and record attendance for the last three years," said McGraw. "We did a survey and found that 50 percent of our attendees last year came from outside the county from areas like Madison, Vicksburg, Holmes County and Humphries County."
McGraw said one thing that makes the Yazoo County Fair so special is the family atmosphere and the security they offer at the event. They always make sure to have plenty of security available to monitor the crowds and to make sure that children stay inside the gated areas at all times.
The Yazoo County Fair Association gives kudos to the Mississippi State University Extension Service for helping put together exhibits, the arts and crafts show, and for judging the exhibits as well.
"We couldn't do it without their help," said McGraw. "We also want to thank the community for supporting the fair for the last 89 years."
