Report confirms that victim was beaten

By JAMIE PATTERSON,

It has been confirmed by state officials that Billy Ray Peeples was “definitely beaten.”

Peeples died June 19 after remaining unresponsive for over a week following head injuries. An autopsy was performed late last week at a state laboratory.

“I got a verbal report that he was definitely beaten,” said Yazoo County Coroner Ricky Shivers.

More specifics and a written report were not available as of press time.

Peeples was discovered June 11 inside a Jerry Clower Boulevard building with head wounds after friends reported last seeing him the previous Friday. An investigation soon began to determine if the victim’s injuries were from an assault or an accident.

Police Chief Ron Sampson said the case has been a difficult one because no tips or information has come forward that traces Peeples’ whereabouts prior to being discovered unresponsive. He urges for anyone with information to come forward to aid in their investigation.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Cpt. William Nevels, criminal investigations supervisor, at the police department at 746-1131.

Or tips may be called into Crimestoppers at 746-TIPS where one can receive up to $1,000 for information regarding this case.
