Her children rise up and call her blessed! Elizabeth Powell Helms born April 11, 1922 passed away on April 15th at the age of 95 at her home in Crystal Springs, MS. For most of her life she was a stay-at-home mom. She loved children and after her own children were grown she went to work at the First United Methodist Daycare in Yazoo City. She rarely went anywhere without those children calling “hey MS Elizabeth” and coming to give her a big hug. After she moved to Crystal Springs she kept up with all of her“kids” from daycare by subscribing to The Yazoo Herald.
She loved her Lord and Savior and instilled in all her children and grandchildren how important it was to love and serve God. She faithfully served God and lived a life of service for Him.
Survived by children Myrna Tilghman, Jean Berch (Jerry), Judy Griffin, Szalay (John), and Carole Grantham, 25 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, and 17 great-great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews, who considered her their second mother.
Preceded in death by her husband of 73 years, H.A. “Arnold” Helms, SR, daughter Gwendolyn Helms, son; H.A. “Buddy” Helms, JR, 2 sons-in-law, Corbin Griffin and Gerald Tilghman, 4 grandchildren; Melissa Helms, Joseph Vandevender, Christy Griffin, and Michael Griffin, also her parents Henry & Lou Ella Powell, 6 brothers and 4 sisters.
Services will be at Stricklin-King Funeral Home Chapel Friday April 21. 2017 with visitation 11:00 A.M. - 12:00 P.M. With services at 12:00 P.M. Rev. Bill Powels will officiate with internment to follow in Caile Cemetery in Sunflower County.
