Yazoo City head coach Archie Carlyle choose one of the best basketball programs in Mississippi to start the season off by placing Provine High School as his teams’ second opponent.
Both the Indians and Lady Indians showed off their talent in a pair of close losses. The boys lost 58-46, while the girls squad lost a heartbreaker, 43-39.
“It is the beginning of the season, so I expect us to improve,” Carlyle said. “The mistakes we made, I think, can be corrected.”
Trailing 33-29 to start the fourth quarter, the Lady Indians’ offense did its part, scoring 10 points. However, the defense gave up 10 points to Provine, to keep deficit the same.
The Lady Rams outscored Yazoo City in all but the fourth quarter, but only led by three points, 19-16, at halftime.
“They played better this time around,” Carlyle said. “I’m proud of the way they bounced back from that big loss. We got back on defense and we hustled more. We made improvements, but I expect us to keep getting better.”
Carissa Jones led the way for Yazoo City with nine points, while Jonquil Dent and Bracey Granderson each had seven.
While the gap between the Indians and Rams wasn’t as close as their female counterparts, there was still plenty of drama late in the game.
